PCO is a term used when you are hiring a car for your private purpose like travel around a city, earn money by making a small car as a taxi as we see UBER.
Some Terms Used In Private Car Driving
PCO License: PCO or Public Carriage Office is the transport department in London. They provide a document called PCO license, which allows you to drive a car in London for UBER, various taxi apps, and for some other purposes, which are authorized by the transport office.
PCO Car: These can be 4 door cars or minivans that meet all the requirements for personal transport for PCO car hire license.
Can I get a PCO License?
Yes, but for this license, you need to apply to the transport office in London. But before applying, you need must have 3 years of UK driver's license and right to work in the UK.
How it Looks Like: This License looks like a plastic card in which serial number, expiring date, and person's information includes.
Can I Use My Car for PCO?
Yes, but your car should meet the basic requirement as following.
- No commercial branding by car.
- A car should be in good condition.
- There should be four independent doors in your car.
- Your car must have a Euro 6 petrol/diesel engine or a Euro 4 petrol-hybrid engine.
If these your car do not meet this requirement then don't worry. You can hire a car. Because there is no need to be an owner for PCO License. Many companies offer services of PCO hire in London.
Requirements for a PCO License
To apply for this driving license you must meet the following requirement:
- Age must be 21year or above.
- Must have the right to work in London.
- Medical proof that you are fit and healthy.
- Topographical skills certificate from an accredited assessment center
- Language Certificate (English).
- Proof that you don't have any criminal record.
Cost to get a license
To get a PCO license you may spend money around £700. It can be up or down depending upon the documents and eligibility you have. If your document and skills fully meet the requirement, then you have to pay less. But if you have fewer documents which do not applicable you have to pay more.

License Renewal Process
If you already have a PCO License and want to renew, then you must apply before one month of expiry. Because TFL( Transport Office) can take weeks to renew your license. For license renewal, you have to prepare all your documents and your latest photo. You can apply online if you have TFL account. You can register on tfl.gov.uk , if you don't have an account. If you don't want the online process you can also apply office at the TFL office. You should submit your old license card to the transport office.
